One of the key “building blocks” in developing our youth is fun. To be productive is fun, to work hard and see the fruits-of-your-labor is fun, to earn rewards is fun. But it is also fun to run, play, dance, sing, watch movies, play sports, shop, go to concerts, and experience theme parks.
Having this wide variety of fun activities is in itself a great learning experience. The NYYC teens are privy to activities they probably cannot have within their environments. And this allows them to envision possibilities for their own lives and what kinds of things they may want to share with their own children when they reach adulthood.
We strongly endorse "EDUTAINMENT."
Gangs have been a plague in the greater New York area longer than anyone cares to remember. Too many teenagers come from single-parent homes, homes with public subsidies, neighborhoods rife with crime and drugs, and schools that cannot seem to adequately communicate to them.
There are neighborhoods where for residents, it doesn’t seem like the sun ever comes up in the morning. For too many young folks it always seems dark and foreboding. It’s a depressing environ that is more common to the inner cities – but extends into the suburbs as well.
The New York Youth Club is coordinating with a number of law enforcement, youth agencies, social programs to shed some light on the problems and offer a variety of options that can remove all of the decaying, infectious, social diseases infesting those communities.
NYYC is a not-for-profit, charitable organization that in it's ten-year history has managed to rescue or contribute to the safeguarding of thousands of teenagers on Long Island. The mission is to provide viable alternatives to gangs and crime for teenagers in the Greater New York area.
Many of the team members of the NYYC come from environments that do not offer positive reinforcing stimuli and activities that prepare teenagers for adulthood. They come from a variety of home-life situations, but many are from single parent homes in crime-ravaged communities like Wyandanch, Central Islip, Brentwood, Westbury and Hempstead
These young people, ages 14 – 17, are attracted to the NYYC because the NYYC offers them fun activities like sports tournaments, Go-Karting, Concerts, Bowling and Theme Park outings. But they get so much more: Learning team concepts, fiscal responsibility, delayed gratification and the value of a good education. Moreover, "Teen Bible Studies" are also available for those who seek a higher moral calling.
And now many of these grateful teenagers, who appreciate the guidance and supervision NYYC offers, are making their own contribution to the families in high-crime areas who can most use the help.
Over the past 20 years, childhood obesity rates have doubled and are now at epidemic proportions. Overweight children and teens are more likely to develop health problems such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes. If current trends continue, today’s kids could be the first generation t live shorter lives than their parents.
Vigorous exercise and a good diet are important for everyone but for teenagers it is absolutely critical to their full adult development and good health. It is a major part of what motivates the NYYC staff to push our teens eat well and exercise often. We have established activities to increase cardiovascular development; build muscle, and reap the rewards of good teamwork.
All studies show that good health and team-play enhances study habits, memory retention and helps support good relationships.
